EKH Spring-Summer 2026 Exhibit: People
People may be the main subject of your image, or they may appear incidentally: a small figure in a landscape, a crowd in the distance, a reflection in a window, a silhouette, or a fleeting moment that adds story or scale. Interpret the theme in your own way. Portraits, street scenes, environmental images, candid moments, formal compositions — all approaches are welcome. Whether or not you typically photograph people -- if a person appears anywhere in your frame, your work belongs in this show.
4.19.26 (midnight): jpegs due
4.27.26 (10 am - 12 pm): Framed intake at EKH

Jack Heller
Sacred Space: A Vanishing Legacy of Immigrant Faith
Jack is a lifelong resident of Newport, Rhode Island. As a photographer, his goal is to create fine art images that are visually compelling and that invite curiosity, careful observation, and thoughtful exploration by the viewer. His photographic interests focus primarily on landscape, abstract imagery, and church architecture.
Over the past several years, Jack has been developing an extensive body of work centered on church architecture and other sacred spaces. This project involves photographing both the overall architectural form and the finer details that define these environments, including stained glass, statuary, paintings, and religious artifacts.
Sacred Spaces: A Vanishing Legacy of Immigrant Faith is a presentation designed to explore both the artistic and technical challenges of working in sacred environments. Jack addresses advanced considerations such as mixed and low-light conditions, extreme dynamic range, compositional decision-making in constrained spaces, and post-processing strategies required to preserve both mood and architectural integrity.
This project is both a tribute and a call to awareness—to recognize, document, and honor the legacy of immigrant-built sacred spaces before they disappear. From intricate stained glass to ornate interiors and handcrafted religious objects, these structures are not only spiritual centers but also remarkable works of art. Their continued existence, however, is often threatened by financial, structural, and cultural challenges.
Daniel Forster
“It all starts with being there!”
As a sailor, I know where to put my photo boat or the helicopter: Avoiding making a wind-shadow and getting the action of the sailors before they disappear behind the sails. Living a photographers life for over 50 years, from processing my own black and white to right away embracing the digital revolution, has been a joy on the water and a privilege.
Swiss born, Daniel Forster is an acclaimed yachting and adventure photographer. Since becoming a freelance photographer in 1974, he has covered 14 America’s Cups and 12 Olympic Games, with his work featured in TIME, National Geographic, STERN, and major yachting magazines worldwide. TIME has twice featured his America’s Cup images on its cover. Daniel has documented iconic teams, global races, and Rolex yachting events, and has been commissioned by leading yacht owners to chronicle their campaigns. Daniel has been based in Rhode Island since 1988 and moved to Jamestown in 2000. He is still covering yacht races in the USA and Europe, covering, for instance, the Rolex Yachting events, the New York Yacht Club events and the Newport Bermuda Race. Plus, he enjoys sailing with his partner Paula, racing locally, and spending time on the water with family and friends.
Visit Daniel’s website to see his work.
Mike Dooley
The Art of Seascape: An educational and inspirational photography presentation focused on our shorelines. Sandy beach to rugged rocks, sunrise to sunset and maybe a little of nighttime as well.
Visit Mike’s website for more information about him as his photography.
Kannetha Brown
The Newport Photo Guild is proud to welcome Kannetha Brown, a second-generation Cambodian-American artist working in analog photography, narrative history, and textile traditions. Her practice centers on cultural preservation and historical reckoning, drawing from both personal memory and collective heritage.
During this talk, Kannetha will showcase new work and reflect on her use of analog processes as a deliberate, tactile approach to storytelling. She will share insights into four interconnected photography projects that trace Cambodian identity, diaspora, and intergenerational memory across Rhode Island, New York, and Massachusetts. Through family archives, portraiture, and landscape, Brown’s work explores the resilience of memory and the significance of image-making as a tool for cultural survival.
Join us for an evening of analog photography, storytelling, and dialogue.
For more information about Kannetha, see her bio or visit her website .

Kevin Bruff
Everyday Vision: The Art Discovered in Daily Photography
Through the discipline of daily practice, Kevin has found that time invested becomes images earned. Each day with the camera sharpens the eye, strengthens creative intuition, and opens new ways of seeing. In this presentation, he reflects on a process of discovery—capturing the silence of nightscapes, the fleeting beauty of nature, and the transformation of the ordinary into art—showing how patience and persistence breathe life into photography.

Deborah Loab Bohren
Mobile Artistry: Apps to Help You Capture Images in New and Creative Ways
Mobile phone apps have become increasingly powerful, putting an entire creative toolkit right at our fingertips. In this presentation, Deb will guide you through the in’s and out’s of some of her favorite apps for creating multiple exposure and ICM images in-camera — Slow Shutter, Bluristic and Average Camera Pro for the iPhone, along with FV-5 for androids and the Samsung Galaxy’s built-in multiple exposure feature.
These innovative apps open the door to creating unique images using techniques that previously were only available in the realm of DLSRs or mirrorless cameras. As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you and with these apps you can leverage the creative power of your smartphone as a gateway to unexpected and endless artistic possibilities.

Edward Olsund
Please join us to hear for Edward Olsund. Edward views himself not so much as a photographer, but as an abstract artist whose chosen medium is digital photography. He creates abstract images which are not of something, but complete abstractions. The photographic images are created without the intent of a specific form but take many forms from those that remind us of astronomical features to splashes of color that might well up in the deep ocean. Because they start from the dynamic natural processes, each image is unique and can not be reproduced even knowing all the inputs and techniques.
For more information about Edward, please check out his website and INK Magazine.

Please join us to hear from Jeff Reynolds and JR Lynch…
Jeff Reynolds: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words and the Process of Starting a Photography Business
We all have heard the phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” A good journalist when reporting on a story will use photographs to provide visual images to amplify the answers to the questions of the five Ws and H; who, where, when, why, what, and how. The process of starting a photography business can be described using this same method. We will take a journalistic journey of words and images in describing the start of the photography business of Nancy Tynan Photography LLC.
JR Lynch: Impressions of Vietnam, August 1967 to Aug 1968 using Kodak Instamatic Camera (non-combat images)
I always carried my camera with me and took photographs (color slides) when I could. I had three separate assignments during my 365 day tour, which provided many interesting photo opportunities which I will share and explain with the images. Some of the 50-year-old slides are not in good condition. I have scanned them with a film scanner and processed them with Adobe Photo Shop’s new AI photo restoration process. I will talk about my experience with the Adobe restoration process. My time in Vietnam was the first time I took photographs on a continuous basis of what looked interesting to me……capturing that special moment !.....my future interest in photography started in Vietnam.

Any entries that are AI generated must be designated as digital art rather than photography.
This will be a juried exhibit and prizes will be awarded. The juror will be Jason Fong, Curator of the South Coast Artists Association. More information about Jason can be found here. Each member is encouraged to submit an entry. Click here to pay the $15 registration fee. Image submission and framing instructions can be found here. Please title your email Library.

Eric Hovermale: Maine, COVID and Beyond
Please join us as Eric Hovermale will present a 2012 photo essay about a friend who lived in an old corn cannery in rural Maine. He will also present a portfolio of photos from the last 2-3 years, focused on dance, portrait figure, motion studies and performance.
Eric lives and works in Newport, RI. Although he studied to be a painter, he has concentrated on photography for the past fifteen years. His subject matter centers principally on the figure and on the portrait. His figure studies are primarily explorations of movement, form, and light. "In my images, I try to retain something of the spirit of my interaction with the subject. If you look at one of my images and have just a flash of a memory or a feeling without knowing why or what, I’ll feel that I’ve succeeded. However, if you look at my images and enjoy doing so, I’ll be just as happy. In a portrait, it’s always my goal to create an image that captures the interest of the viewer regardless of whether he or she knows the subject. One shouldn't need to know the subject to be intrigued."
Eric’s website can be accessed at erichovermale.com.
