Church Sitters by Lisa Bergeron

First Place

There is a lot going on in this image that I love. I have to admit this one cauught my by surprise I didn’t realize an image creatively manipulated would draw me in as it did. Personally, I immediately related to it. We have been traveling to Europe for over a decade and one thing I capture each time and LOVE is the interactions of the locals. Even if they are sitting in quiet companionship. No words needed to feel the connection. Truly magical. The fact that it’s a focal point of this image, in my opinion, elevated it vs. just a beautiful capture of a scene in Greece. Technically I love the composition, the interplay of light and shadow, the dark shapes of the trees help to frame the scene. The patterned street against the white facade of the church adds visual interest as well as the colored flags taken by the breeze. This image feels joyful and inviting.

What I love about this image are the design elements of it. The almost solid color of the shades of green provide a great background for the intricate details of the boat. I’m drawn to water and the story it tells. You can see the shapes of the trees and sky reflected in the top half of the image. The reflection of the boat help to ground it in the scene and the ripples of water in the foreground give it a nice textural element. The boat’s movement at a slight angle in the frame draws the viewers eye. And the small branches five it a beautiful but subtle framing that remind me of the botanical elements in Japanese paintings.

Larry and I were both attracted by this image. It drew me in when I first looked at all the images, but in my mind I set it aside. However it honestly had a magnetic effect of drawing me back in again and again. Side note - We want our art to do that! It has an interesting appeal of feeling industrial yet unexpectedly dream like. The monochromatic palette across the tonal range is well captured. Dark ground, reflective puddles and the further points disappearing into the fog draw you in. I would be curious to know if it’s part of a larger series.

  • Honorable Mention: Mullranny by Emily Duwan

Mary’s choice: What attracts me in images is a combination of things. I like how colors play off each other. I’m drawn to light, shadow and texture and how the image pulls you in. What I love about this one is the juxtaposition of the neutrals in the dock against the blues of the sea and sky. The light and shadows elevate the symmetry of the dock’s structure. It is graphically appealing with the color and lines. Bright, vibrant and fun. When I look at it I can feel the warmth of the late afternoon sun. The same scene on a cloudy day would have a very different feel.

  • Honorable Mention: Here's Looking at You Kid by Veronica Bruno

Larry’s choice: This image has a universal appeal that is also pure fun and joy! I can almost see the person (kid or adult) holding this touch little fella and smiling while holding him in his hand! It says: beach!, it says, Summer!, it is so joyful!!! Nice composition with the crab being slightly offset and the fingers being curled gives it a good dynamic. The sand in the hand is so perfect! It would look great printed big!!!
