IT’S All ABOUT THE LIGHT
“Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light.
Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”
- George Eastman
Submissions Open, Members Only, Non-Juried Exhibit
On exhibit October 2026-Spring 2027 at the Edward King House Gallery, Second Floor, Newport. This gallery space continues to allow our members to challenge themselves, stretch their creativity, and have fun in a relaxed environment.
Theme: It’s All About the Light
This exhibition invites photographers to explore light as an integral part of the scene - something that does more than simply illuminate the subject. Consider how the quality, direction, color, or absence of light shapes the photograph and contributes to what makes the image compelling. An ordinary subject, with extraordinary light, can be more powerful than an extraordinary subject in ordinary light.
Photography is never just about the subject, but the light.
It defines the composition - a pool of light, strong shadow, or areas of darkness can shape the frame and direct the viewer’s eye.
It creates mood - warm or cool light, hard or soft, high or low, light influences the emotion of an image.
It reveals or conceals - it separates a subject from its surroundings or allows only part of a scene to emerge from darkness.
It interacts - reflections, highlights, textures, wet surfaces, refraction, and patterns create expressions of light.
Marks a moment in time - from first light, last light, blue hour, storm light, or a distinctive quality of light embrace a unique moment.
