PROGRAMS: 2011 Schedule

  • Wednesday, JANUARY 19, 2011 - Critique of members’ images by internationally known photographer Clint Clemens

While Clint has suggested a three image series showing how you arrived at the final image, it will be perfectly acceptable to show any three images you want critiqued.

NOTE - you can show images and NOT have them critiqued, just shared. You will be asked when your first image comes on the screen to say yes or no to a critique.

LIMIT OF THREE IMAGES: Please have the images in their OWN folder either on a flash drive (preferred) or a CD and labeled with your name and Photo Guild. If you have more than one folder on your media, please try to have your Photo Guild folder as the top folder. This will save a LOT of time in downloading the images to the projecting laptop and keeping them in order when projecting.

SPECIFICATIONS: Images can be jpeg or tiff, in sRGB color space with dimensions being 1024 pixels on the long side by 768 pixels on the short side. Resolution for projection is not critical and can be anything from 96 to 360 ppi, your choice.

This can be a great opportunity to have a highly successful, working photographer give you constructive feedback about your photography style. Let's hope a lot members will take advantage of Clint's skill, insight, and experience.

  • Wednesday, FEBRUARY 16, 2011 - Presentation by noted videographer Sprague Theobald

Capitalizing on the growing interest among still photographers to get more involved in video, Sprague Theobald, Newport resident and award winning video documentarian will present a mixed media program where he will show clips and slides from this award winning documentary  NORTHWEST PASSAGE.   Sprague will share his views on the historical significance of the trip and what it took to prepare for and undertake this treacherous journey.  And, in what promises to be of great interest, he will discuss, from a professional point of view, what it takes to make videos that (as we are aware with our still photography) take into account such components as light, composition, camera angle, perspective, etc.  Free and open to the public,  the program will take place in the Ilgenfritz Gallery of the Newport Art Museum, 76 Bellevue Ave. at 7PM on Wednesday, February 16.
UPDATE: Sprague has informed me that the majority of the images he will be showing have never been seen before in public. This will be a real treat!
UPDATE #2: FOR MEMBERS INTERESTED IN "SHOW AND TELL", please come at 6:30 and share.

Richard Schultz, a resident of Barrington RI, has many, many well known clients and is highly regarded for his ability to size up a subject and document it quickly and effectively. Please see his article in the (July/August) issue of Yankee Magazine for a great example of his current work.

His topic, geared to the varied interests and skill level of the Photo Guild membership (something for everyone!) will be SEEING THE PICTURE AND CAPTURING THE MOMENT. That's right - we have returned to our earlier goal for having presenters who INFORM AND INSPIRE!

MEETING TIME, PLACE: Please meet at the south end of the STOP AND SHOP shopping mall, just off the traffic circle close to the Newport bridge entrance and be prepared to depart at 5:30 so we can car pool.
WHAT TO BRING: If you wish, please bring a picnic meal which you can eat as soon as we arrive at Beavertail. Or, eat before we leave, your choice!
PHOTO POSSIBILITIES: The Lighthouse, of course, but plenty of rocks, surf, patterns, bunkers, etc. And, this is a great place for sunsets if the conditions are right.

Wednesday, July 27 - Brenton Point State Park
Judy Tate will be leading her ever-popular kite-athon at Brenton Point State Park in Newport. Judy has a wonderful selections of kites she will launch, given enough wind! Wednesday, August 3, 2011- Field Trip this week will be in the area of King Park (Wellington Avenue and Thames Street) and will give us an opportunity to shoot sunsets, harbor, boats, shops, and (before 6pm) Thames Street Glass Studio.
WE WILL MEET @ 5PM AT THE BASEBALL FIELD (On right side of Wellington close to Thames). Many will want to picnic, so that is an option, perhaps first, to catch later light. For those who want to eat later, Firehouse Pizza is convenient.
PARKING: Plenty of open parking; a section on the right side is signed for Resident Stickers. The area was heavily used yesterday (Sat.) when I did a preview for Wed., but should not be a problem on a Wednesday evening.
In addition, there will be a '94 Buick Roadmaster Wagon as an optional accessory----anyone have a surfboard?
For ???s, call me (847-7367, home or 662-5450, cell, that evening).

Wednesday, Aug 10, 2011 - Ray Drueke -The People of Newport
Last year Ray Drueke led a photo walk to capture "The Image of Newport" and the photographers hung their images in the lobby of the Newport Public Library. The best image was selected by People's Choice voting.
The Photo Guild has again reserved the library for this photo walk and the subject is"The People of Newport." Join Ray on August 10th and create street portraits of the people of Newport. Each photographer who participates in this walk may hang up to 3 framed images in the lobby of the library during the month of October. Would you like to create portraits of 3 tourists on America's Cup Ave, lower Thames Street or over near the mansions? Maybe the people would be 3 service people, 3 noteworthy Newport residents or maybe 3 Newport politicians? Get out of your landscape comfort zone and join us for this challenging adventure in street photography!
We'll meet at 5PM in Eisenhower Park (Washington Square) across from the Jane Pickens Theatre. Complete details of the exhibit will only be available at the photo walk on August 10th.
LATE BREAKING NEWS: The weather is very iffy for The People of Newport photo walk led by Ray Drueke. Ray suggests the following:
In an effort to accommodate both the questionable weather AND those who could not make it tomorrow, Ray will lead the walk BOTH tomorrow evening as well as next Wednesday, August 17 and will be at the meeting place at 5pm both evenings.
Now here is the CATCH: In order to be eligible to have your images hung in the Newport Public Library for "People's Choice", you must pick up the TIPS which Ray will hand out and can be done EITHER evening. How easy is that!? Not able to stay either evening for the walk, be sure to pick up the tips sheet and follow the instructions therein in order to plan your shooting time. Questions? Ray is at 508-259-3250 or Ray Drueke <ray@austinlanestudios.com>
